The Gateway of India is a famous monument in Mumbai. The Gateway is a basalt arch which is 26 metres high, located on the waterfront in South Mumbai. Traditionally, the Gateway is the first thing that most of the visitors and travelers want to see after arriving by a boat or a ferry. The Gateway steps lead down to the waterfront and ferry rides can be taken to visit the very famous Elephanta Caves.

The Gateway is reinforced concrete and is built from yellow basalt. It is Indo-Saracenic in architectural style and the elements of it are derived from the Muslim architectural styles of 16th century that were famous in Gujarat. The central dome is 15 metres in diameter and 26 metres above ground at its highest point. The harbour port front was realigned and made parallel to come in line with a planned boulevard which would sweep down to the centre of the town. The cost of the construction was Rs. 21 lakhs which was incurred by the Government of India.

The Gateway of India was built in december in 1911 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay. The foundation stone was laid on March 31, 1911 by the Governor of Bombay Sir George Sydenham Clarke. In 1920, the foundations were completed and the construction was finished in 1924. The Gateway was opened on December 4, 1924 by the Viceroy, the Earl of Reading.

Gateway of India still remains one of the favorite tourist spot of Mumbai.
