Effective teamwork has always helped most organizations, groups, communities and associations to achieve objectives, overcome obstacles, make important decisions, implement new ideas and realize goals. However, there is a lot that goes into building a good team. A good team not only requires good members but coordination and communication between them are also important. Each member of the team needs to feel comfortable to contribute to the team. Hence, team building is necessary. Team building is a process through which each member of the team is introduced, informal discussions are encouraged so that the team interacts and there is a certain level of bonding among the members. All these activities are undertaken to improve team performance and bringing out the best of qualities of each member of that team. Team building activity also helps the member to know other members of the team, their strengths, their weakness etc. The objective of team building activities is to create an environment amongst the team members in which each individual feels at home, contributes effectively to realize the purpose of the team.

Now most teams have a leader, manager or a captain who initiates processes and handles the team. Leaders need to have team building skills which are necessary for team effectiveness. These team building skills includes understanding of team work, identifying the capabilities of each member of the team, motivating employees, fostering communication, improving member relationship etc. A team is considered to be a successful team if it can achieve more than the individuals of that team can achieve single handedly.

There are many team building activities that are organized to break the ice and encourage interaction amongst the team. One of the common team building activities is to complete a story with the help of certain pictures. Each member of the team has a picture but cannot show it to others. The pictures are randomly arranged. All the members of the group have to patiently communicate and understand other’s pictures in order to form the story. You can also play certain fun team building activities such as tug-of-war and treasure hunt. These fun activities require a lot of team work, strategies, communication and tactics to win the game.

Corporate team building activities involve simulations where the teams are given mock situations where the company has faced certain crisis and employees needs to get together to choose the right path of action. There are many organizations that conduct one to three day team building programs in a fun atmosphere outside the workplace, where activities are carried out in an effective way to strengthen communication, rapport, and teamwork amongst the employees.

Team building exercises, more often than not work for most employees and management students who understand the importance of working in a team, how to distribute work in a team, how to involve all the members of a team, motivating them, challenging them and engaging them in a way where each feels a need to contribute to achieve the team’s purpose or goal.
