how to write a speech

There are 8 parts of speech in English grammar that one needs to know how to use in order to speak and write in good English.

These indispensable eight are verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections.

Once you have mastered the use of these, you can move on to more complicated lessons in English Grammar and the conversational use of English words. Here, you would need to understand how to use sarcasm, irony, similes, metaphors, and how to play with words to stress your point. These are absolutely essential elements of everyday, conversational English.

Once you have grasped these basic elements, you could, should you choose to, embark on a career of speech writing. But here, you would need to learn a little more about the components of a good speech. There are many different kinds of speeches like informative speeches, demonstrative speeches or retirement speeches, to name a few, Different speeches have different requirements and the speaker’s personality too has a large role to play in the effectiveness of any speech. But this should not undermine the importance of a well written speech as through History, great speeches have been seen to mark the careers of heroes.

Here are some tips to help you write a good speech.: The tone of the speech must echo the mood of the audience. A good speech writer must be able to use words in such a way as to touch the audience, so that the audience does not alienate the speaker but rather see him or her as one of them. Information and research are key factors of a good speech, and not just in an informative speech. The audience should not be left with a feeling that the speaker is hiding crucial details or does not have all the facts. A good speech must at least create the illusion of complete clarity.

Involve the speaker in the speech by making a reference to his or her own past experience. This makes the audience relate to, and connect with the speaker and allows the speaker a better chance to get through to his or her public. Make the speaker’s position clear. The speaker should not seem to be changing sides and must not come across as indecisive. He or she must have a clear stand on the issue at hand and this must come through in the speech.

Simplicity is always important for communication to be effective. A speech is nothing if not a way to communicate with a larger group. So use simple and clear vocabulary as far as possible.
Try and use key words at the end of sentences wherever possible. This makes a lasting impression. For instance, instead of saying something like, ‘We need to find strength in each other,’ you could say something like, ‘We must turn to each other for support and strength.’
Always ensure that your speech has a great start and a powerful end. Try and include a few memorable sentences in between for added impact.
