Eastern Railways is a mass transportation system serving the eastern regions of India. This railway was established on April 14, 1952 and is headquartered at Kolkata. It serves a large part of the eastern region including the West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand. It further stretches to other cities like Howrah, Sealdah, Malda and Asansol where it runs a number of railway services, express and mail trains.
Later on, in 1955 some portion from the Eastern Railway was shifted to be a part of the South Eastern Railway. Thereafter, on 30th September 2002 Eastern Railway was stretched to 4245.61 km and on 1st October 2002, Danapur, Dhanbad and Mughalsarai were separated and shifted under East Central Railway area.
Eastern Railways is believed to be the most integral zone of Indian Railways as it covers some of the most densely populated regions of the country. It also stretches further to the borders of Bangaladesh upto Lalgola, Gede and Benapole in the East, Kiul and Malda in the North, Namkhana in the South and Jhajha and Asansol in the West.
This zone has a number of express trains or fast long distance trains within the regions. One of the most popular trains in this zone is the Rajdhani Express that runs from Delhi to Sealdah. It is also known that this zone of railways was the first one to introduce Diesel Multiple Units. It also holds benefit for various other industries like fertilizer plants, industrial regions, and oil industry by carrying particles and machinery from one place to the other.
