Public speaking is an art. Mastering this art is a gradual process. It does not happen overnight; rather it requires tremendous effort and perseverance to master this wonderful art. There are several guidelines to be followed in an attempt to make for a successful public speaker.
Few of them are as follows:-
- Being familiar with the presentation or speech room is of paramount importance. One must know the place well in advance where one has to speak. Knowing place well in advance involves arriving early to the place; take a walk around the place and little bit of practicing. The last step can be done in a more appropriate way by using microphones and using some visual assistance.
- Once the speaker has made himself comfortable with place, he must strive to know the audience better. Greeting the arriving audience sets a positive tone to the speech. It also helps in making few friends as the saying goes, ‘It’s easier to speak to a group of friends than to a group of strangers’.
- After getting acquainted with the audience, the speaker should focus on the speech part by practicing and revising it. In other words, knowing the material well in advance reduces the probability of nervousness and enhances the confidence.
- Before making the speech, the speaker should try to relax by doing some breathing exercises which eases nerves. The exercise also includes visualizing oneself on the podium, speaking with loud, clear and confident voice. It’s imperative to think of oneself as successful speaker before actually doing the action.
- The speaker should also perceive audience as his friends who want to be entertained or informed and get some insight. Having a genuine faith in audience is quite helpful in making a successful speech. While speaking, the speaker should not try to apologize for his speech because that will cause undue attention from audience. There is a great chance of audience not noticing any sort of problems with the speaker’ speech so keeping mum is the best option.
