natural hair color
|
|
What does hair owe its color to? It is due to
pigmentation which indicates the presence of chemicals like
melanin and phaeomelanin. Generally speaking, the greater the
percentage of melanin, the darker is the color of the hair, the
less the percentage of melanin, the lighter is the color of the
hair. This would mean that hair color could range from blond to
a dark black, with intervening shades of red and brown.
Depending upon the ethnic origin of the person, the natural hair
color varies.
Natural Black hair is predominant in countries outside Europe,
although it does occur even in European countries. |
Black hair has lots of eumelanin and is a little less
dense than the other hair colors. Even this black has variations. It
could be a deep black with the hair being of a very different texture.
East Asians have hair which is straight and black, while Africans have
black coarse hair. In the other parts of the world, different black hair
forms surface.
Like black hair, natural brown hair is also prevalent in many parts of
the world. You may be surprised to know that brown hair and blond hair
are genetically connected. Over a period of time, blond hair can turn
brown. The only difference between blond and natural brown hair is that
the latter contains more eumelanin than blond but less eumelanin than
black.
People who have natural brown hair are called brunettes if they are
female and a brunet if they are male. Natural blond hair is perhaps a
little rare and the blond color can vary from platinum blond to a golden
blond. Both phaeomelanin and eumelanin are present. The more the
proportion of phaeomelanin, the more golden is the color of the hair,
the more the proportion of eumelanin, the less golden is the hair. In
fact, so light is the golden color, that people having very light golden
hair are referred to as ash blonds.
Natural red hair is perhaps the least common. Hair could be strawberry
red or deep auburn. The color of red hair is due to the mutation of a
recessive gene. It has huge amounts of phaeomelanin and very low amounts
of eumelanin.
It is perhaps unfortunate that we cannot choose the color of our hair.
However, with the ever increasing number of dyes that are present, you
can change the color of your hair. Just be cautious and exercise
restraint while doing so.
