The traditional
Indian garment worn by women, the sari, has been considered as
the most gracious of attire the world over.
In fact, women from
around the globe admire this piece of clothing, and often
Hollywood stars are seen wearing it for various red carpet
functions. Oprah Winfrey had Aishwarya Rai demonstrate how to
drape the saree on one of her shows.
Thus, until recently
when fashion wizards from across the world thought of Indian
fashion, the only thing that would strike their mind is the sari
worn by the women. And of course not to leave out the dhoti
kurta worn by the men, as well as the other traditional chudidar
kurta and sherwani. |
However, in the last decade Indian
fashions has been rapidly changing with some renowned designers having
taken the nation onto the global map of fashion. Their indo-western
styles have gained them international repute, thus proving that
traditional Indian garments can be styled to suit the western world.
The recent evolution of Indian fashion is an interesting story that is
in continuum. Fashion gurus of the western world admired the typical
clothes worn here, but also were finding ways to make it wearable in the
west. After all draping a sari is not all that simple. Even stitching a
typical salwar kameez could only be done by the Indian tailors. However
designers such as Ritu Beri, Ritu Kumar, Rohit Bal, etc., treaded where
no other domestic designers dared to and carved a niche for themselves
in the international garment industry.
Today, the way an Indian dresses is far different from the previous
years. Earlier the current western styles would step into India when it
was almost redundant in the west and a new trend was already making
waves. So, fashion garments in India reached a little too late. But,
over the years with media explosion and the fashion designers of India
being constantly in touch with all that is happening in the west, the
nation is literally walking hand-in-hand, where fashion is concerned,
with the rest of the world.
Since the last decade or so designing fashion in India has assumed a
mainstream professional status. This is a step up compared to the time
when it was looked down upon and individuals used to simply imitate
their favorite stars and have their clothes tailored. Today, everyone
wants their garments styled personally by a qualified designer, and not
just their local tailor.
People are influenced by the Indian fashion show. They eagerly wait to
see the latest designs worn by the models on the ramp and then
immediately pick up some fabric and get a similar style tailored for
them. The way people dress is far different from the last century. They
have adopted the practicality of western garments..
