indian dress

The clothes of India are considered the most colorful the world over. One visit to Rajasthan, the State, which epitomizes the true colors of the nation will explain why Indian garments are considered so colorful.

Apart from the solid and vibrant colors that are used as the base the Indian dress is rich in embroidery. Not just threads and beads, but also gold and silver wiring and semi-precious stones are used to adorn the clothes.

Designers have carried this rich heritage of the Indian attire in their modern day indo-western garments. However, nothing compares to the Indian ceremonial dress for both males and females.

Till date, on special occasions and festivals the women adorn themselves from head to toe. They either wear the traditional sari, chaniya choli, ghagra choli or then the salwar kameez. These are made out of rich and shiny fabrics such as silk, raw silk and satin. And finely adorned with various kinds of ethnic work.

The men are dressed in the ethnic chudidar kurta, or then the dhoti kurta. Usually their attire is in white or shades of cream with slight embroidery done around the neck and buttonhole region.

Their attire too is stitched in silk or satin. They carry a colorful scarf on top and as an optional where a colored waist coat with mirror work done on it. Another festive attire for men is the sherwani, mainly worn at weddings.

Typically there are not too many Indian dress types. However, what differs from state to state is the ethnic embroidery done. In certain places, especially north India the traditional work done on the garments is known as zardosi work. This is work done with gold and silver wires. And to enrich the clothes even more semi precious stones are added. East India is famous for its kantha work ..
