india flag

Independence, freedom, liberation… are the various words that dominate the general Indian psyche.

Today, there may not be too many people living to speak about the struggle to gain India her independence, but yet there are families that carry the heritage of having at least one martyr in the family lineage.

And India’s struggle for freedom is one that the entire world is proud of, yet no nation has been able to emulate it.

India’s sons and daughters patiently protested the British Raj. They silently bore the bruises and lashes with salt smeared on their inflicted wounds believing that one day the white man would be exhausted.

Under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi the entire nation knew that one day they would be able to enjoy the fruits of freedom. Their were a few youth who felt that violence was the only way, but they were either axed or converted to the Mahatma way.

The battle was long and tough. Sometimes the ray of home shone brightly through the shadows crated by marching soldiers and sometimes there seemed to be only specs of light. Indian leaders were thrown into jail. They were beaten black and blue, but they continued to use their weapon of non-violence and faith.

The unfurling of the India flag was the first time the actual feeling of freedom dawned onto every citizen of the nation. There was celebration and jubilation in every nook and corner of the Indian Sub-Continent. The tri-colored flag the world over became not only the national symbol representing the country, but also symbolic of the non-violent victory of India. The world saluted her.

Various people have attempted to give their own meaning of the India flag; yet common consensus says that it means freedom. Watching the flag be hoisted every year on the Independence Day (15th August) and Republic Day (26th January) reminds one and all about the joy and excitement everyone must have experienced the first day it was hoisted. The flag is like the wings of the nation swaying to the rhythm of the breeze in gay abandon.

Much has been said and written about the India flag. Poets have written verses and patriotic songs have been written in its honor. But no tribute is greater than the one paid by each citizen when they pay their respects to each one who sacrificed their lives and livelihood to ensure the nation is freed from the thick chains of bondage. They are the true creators of this flag.
