What is the meaning
of culture? According to the dictionary one of the meanings of
the culture is: “The totality of socially transmitted behavior
patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of
human work and thought.” And this is the same connotation we
look at when talking of any country’s culture, including that of
India. Whether from the historic perspective, or as it exists
today, the culture of India is a unique one that has been
studied and continues to be studied by scholars across the
world.
This is one nation where the ancient seems to be imbibed into
the modern. This is a feature that is all the more peculiar
amongst the spiritual masters of the nation, who go
globetrotting teaching the Indian scriptures in a modern way by
giving practical examples of adaptation. .. |
And so, what was written eras ago, can be
easily understood even today. Not only this but even other ancient
aspects of the cultures of India are being blended into modern day
living.
Primarily, the culture in India today is far more democratic than it has
ever been. One prime example is the constant increase in the number of
inter-caste marriages. Until the middle of the 1990s inter-caste
marriages were rare. It was essential to marry within the caste and some
castes were particularly rigid about maintaining marriages within
sub-castes.
But, this seems to have changed. For young people marrying, today
compatibility and understanding well surpasses any other typical
distinctions followed earlier, which proves the general adaptability of
the common Indian citizen. There are, however, still some castes that
prefer to maintain strict rules where marriage is concerned.
Apart from the above, cultures of India seem to be more tolerant towards
each other in other ways. Earlier one would see people mixing with
others from the same community, but these barriers seem to have broken,
and most importantly in the urbanized regions of the nation the thick
walls of the rigid caste system seems to have been broken. There is a
oneness being maintained at the grass root levels.
Today, festival celebration is not restricted to any particular religion
or caste or state for that matter, but have taken a on a different
definition – being Indian festivals.
Thus, the modern culture of India is one that can be stated to be
breaking all barriers that seemed to have existed in times gone by. It
is one where new aspects are being adopted, along with the older ones
being respected and upheld. The most important aspect is that the older
generation of people is making an effort to change with the times. They
are also adopting the modern way of life with immense joy and happiness.
However, this is a common trend in the urbanized areas. A majority of
rural areas still prefer to maintain the old way of living. But that
tends to remind us of the heritage that the country has passed through
the ages.
