Rubber is one of the
best materials for flat roofs. Ofcourse it works for other
sloping roofs too, but flatter is better. Rubber roofing
materials are either rolled rubber roofing that is hot tar. This
hot tar is rolled over your roof and the seams are nailed.
However as seams are included here, they will ultimately give
way and leaking will get inevitable.
So when you are getting it done from a contractor ask him if
there will be any seams that have to be nailed. If the answer is
yes, pull far away from this system. On the other hand if he
tells you it is one huge membrane then you can be relived as
there are no seams involved here. No seams, means there are no
nails, so no nails that will weaken and fall off or leave a hole
open for water leaking. |
Keeping in tune with environmentalists,
recycled rubber roofing too is available in India. You get them in
different brand names, but most of them are recycled. So the rubber
qualities are still there are they are more lightweight and durable as
compared to wood, mud or slate shingles that are heavier. You get these
recycled rubber styled in the form of slate shingles. No one will know
the difference due to the close similarity, yet there are a million
differences.
Another option that is coming to light is the rubber membrane roofing.
It has been known to stand the test of time and weather. They are better
than asphalt roofing that is used to keep the gravel of the roof down
during forceful winds and rain. However over a period of time, the
gravel loosens within causing leakages, here asphalt is then put over it
to work as a shield.
Against this the rubber membrane is like one huge sheet over your house.
No seams mean no problems of leakages for years to come. However this
style of roofing requires professional help. So if you are planning self
installed rubber roofing with rubber membrane, it is not a good idea.
Besides this roofing you can do it yourself installation for other
rubber roofs.
