Narrative essays are
essays that tell stories. Hence, they require you to combine
your writing skills and descriptive powers to create something
that will help readers emote. When you write narrative essay,
you have to remember that you are the person telling the story.
Hence, you have to
find a way to get the person reading the story to relate with
what is being said in the essay. In that sense a good narrative
essay should be able to successfully achieve a transfer of
emotions from the narrator to the reader. Here are some
narrative essay examples: My first day in school or My own
experience with ragging in college. |
Narrative essay topics for high school
could include ‘Coping with dyslexia,’ or something like, ‘I missed the
prom’. Be careful to choose narrative essay topics that move you. Choose
to narrate a story that you attach strong emotions to, as this would
make it easier for you to communicate those feelings to the reader.
One should also remember that while your narrative essay is an account
of your experience that does not necessarily mean that you have to stick
to the facts.
While thinking of how to write a narrative essay, remember that a lot
can be achieved by a employing a few grammatical tools. For instance,
the author could use dramatic, expressive parts of speech to stir up the
reader’s emotions.
The opening sentence is very important in
a narrative essay as it sets the tone for the essay and allows the
reader to make certain assumptions about the direction the story should
take. This tool can even make the essay more exciting if the author
chooses to add a twist somewhere along the body of the essay. A sample
narrative essay introduction would be something like, ‘My first day in
college was a real disaster. I tried to enroll in the college’s
extra-curricular activity programme, but soon it became apparent that I
had little or no future as an athelete’.
Illustration narrative essays employ the use of pictures or photographs
to lay emphasis on certain facts included in the essay. This is another
effective tool that one can use.
The final point of the essay should come through in the last line or
closing line of the essay in order to create an impact on the reader.
However, the first paragraph could also include a line explaining the
point of the essay.
Since writing a narrative essay is essentially about story-telling, it
is important for the author to take the elements of good story-telling
into consideration. All the other details and elements that the author
introduces into the essay must not - in his attempt to make the story
more interesting - lose sight of the central point of the essay.
In one sense these are the easiest essays to write as you do not have to
look outside of yourself for ideas. But, on the other hand, narrative
essays can be quite a challenge as writing such essays exposes a certain
aspect of your soul.
