descriptive essay

Descriptive essays are essays which contain detailed descriptions about something. When you need to describe a thing, a picture or an emotion, it would help to list the way you see, think and feel about the subject or topic. That is what descriptions are all about.

If, for instance, you had to describe an orange, you could write down adjectives such as fruit, round, orange, citrus scent, sweet or sour. If someone was to read that list, he or she would probably conjure up the image of an orange.
Writers have been seen to use several ways to describe something, as opposed to just the simple and direct method mentioned above.

They do this by carefully choosing their words  or by drawing comparisons between the subject and something radically different from it. The way that anyone chooses to describe something may be completely different from the way that someone else may choose to describe the same thing. The point is, that when you write a descriptive essay, your uniqueness is what will earn you a higher grade.

As is the case with all essays, choose your subject carefully, if you have the option to. Descriptive essay topics can include anything like even an accident or rescue mission that you witnessed or read about in the news papers. Try and opt for a topic which you know well and something that has the potential of arousing the reader’s interest. Make sure that you do not beat around the bush or lose sight of the central theme of your essay. Stay focused.

Organising your thoughts is the key to essay writing as a whole. What you write in the introduction and concluding paragraphs is crucial to your essay. Plan out what you want to write in the paragraphs that form the body of the essay as well so as to avoid repetition.
It helps to add the comments of others if you are describing an event that occurred or something like say, a football match.

Aside from being a school assignment, writing such essays could win you prizes as well if you enter descriptive essay contests. Such contests are held regularly and you can get information about them on the internet. For practice you can get an example descriptive essay from a website and try to re-create the same description in your own words. This exercise will help you develop your descriptive powers.

You can and should employ descriptive words that refer to all of the five senses. This helps the reader get a clear picture. For instance, if you are describing a day at the park, you should not only use adjectives that refer to what the flowers or scenery looked like, but also make references to scents that wafted through the air etc. Courtesy :letters
