In recent
years, in India there has been a boom in the Information
technologies sector of the Indian market. This expansion
has given rise to many job opportunities in the
Information technology enabled-services sector. In fact
one of the reasons why this sector has done so well in
recent years is because of the availability of cheap
labor in India. Hence, in a sense, the success of such
businesses has a mutual relationship with the jobs it
provides. Many people in India - such as homemakers for
instance – were a loss to the labor force of the country
because they had to stay home rather than go to work.
However, the ITES jobs made room for the option of
working from home. Many areas of ITES allow for jobs
like data-entry and transcription which can easily be
done at home provided the employees have access to a
computer. |
Making this option available
meant that even homemakers and college-students could apply for
such positions and earn an income now. Such employees, like
those who work home doing data entry, can work at their own pace
and their earnings may differ from month to month according to
the amount of work they are able to put in. This means that they
can put in the amount of work necessary to match their
requirements on a monthly basis. If they have more need for cash
in a certain month for instance, then they can put in those many
more hours of work. In that sense the employees are their own
bosses.
It therefore makes sense that people with fast typing skills who
ca type at a speed of at least thirty to fifty words per minute
are likely to earn a better income from such jobs.
In the case of data entry jobs working home option therefore
draws many more people to those posts. This works well for
organizations as well as there is a rapidly growing need for
data-entry in this, the information age. Data entry and
information processing workers play a pivotal role in ensuring
that information is handled smoothly and efficiently. Typically,
jobs in this sector involve duties like keying or typing in
texts, data-entry, basic clerical work and operating computers
etc.
Employees in this area of work are usually referred to as word
processors, typists, data entry keyers, data entry and
information processing workers, electronic data processors,
keypunch technicians or transcribers depending on the nature of
their work.
Word processors, for example, are entrusted with the task of
preparing reports, letters, mailing labels, and other such
text-oriented material. At the initial stage of employment,
word-processors may be asked to key headings on forms and
letters, address envelopes, or prepare basic forms on
computers.
Gradually they are given more complicated tasks and these may
then be required to be fulfilled with a greater degree of
accuracy. After they have sufficient experience to back them,
word-processors may be entrusted with more technical
information. They may be asked to plan and key in complicated
statistical information and tables or have to prepare ‘master
copies’..
