Today, the
rapid expansion that Information Technologies Enabled
Services sector has seen in India is testimony to the
great demand for the services of such companies from the
overseas market. Data entry service and data-processing
jobs in particular are popularly outsourced by foreign
companies as these jobs do not require a special level
of expertise or special knowledge as such.
Employees need only be equipped with basic knowledge of
English, typing and computer skills in order to qualify
for these jobs. In addition, home based offline data
entry work in India is often undertaken by people who
have existing jobs and want to earn a supplementary
income. Data processing refers to work on the computer
that involves converting data into information or
knowledge that is invaluable to the companies. |
Such information may be about
market trends, consumer tastes or other such information. Data
is only useful to companies when it is presented in the right
format so that it can provide the company management with useful
facts, figures and information. In Western countries,
Data-processing programs are also referred to as
Information-systems or programs, a term which shows their
importance in the practical functioning of companies.
Information has such importance in the modern world, in fact,
that many computer programmers who have designed data processing
systems, now refer to the same systems in terms of information
processing as the word alone carries that much more weight.
Strictly in terms of its definition, data is nothing but a bunch
of numbers, statistics and characters that are measurements of
tastes, likes and dislikes or any other observable and
measurable experiences. The information, therefore, that
entering such data into respective programs thus imparts simply
provides the answers to questions. These questions may be about
consumers’ tastes or about the popularity of certain trends or
about any other matter that relates to the company’s product or
service.
On a general basis, data-processing can also refer to any
process that basically converts one format of data into another
format. For instance, imagine that a business enterprise has got
access to a lot of data which concerns one aspect of its
functioning and operations. Now, the company needs this data to
be presented in a simple and meaningful way so that the managers
of the company can see the data for what it really presents.
Such data must be available for the professionals of such
companies to read and understand and the professionals in turn
must use this data to make changes within the company that will
translate into larger gains.
For a few companies that deal with specific areas,
data-processing does require trained professionals. For
instance, in the case of companies where technical knowledge is
a must, an untrained data-entry worker would not be able to make
head or tail of the data without some information about the
technical terms relevant to that industry. A typical example of
data-entry work may be when a company sends an employee scanned
images in jpg format and data-entry operators then handle the
task of keying in the characters into a word file or document..
