Today, we
are said to live in the ‘information age’ where
information is believed to be the most essential to
success. India has, in recent years, witnessed a rapid
expansion in the arena of Information technology enabled
services and such companies have been an issue of great
debate in the overseas market as well.
This is because Indian companies that offer such
services can afford to offer them for much lower costs
than foreign companies with the result that foreign
companies prefer to outsource such work to Indian
companies. This works well for foreign companies as they
can reduce their costs of operations by anywhere between
thirty to seventy percent by exercising this option.

The debate that this has led to
is basically because of the loss of foreign jobs because of this
outsourcing. However, economists argue that this is merely the
natural order of things and will eventually lead to
strengthening the economies of the western world. In the mean
time, outsourcing jobs from overseas has created many new jobs
in the Indian market especially in the area of data entry with
many people choosing to do data entry jobs from home in India.
There are many advantages of such jobs for both the employers as
well employees of data-entry firms. For one thing, companies the
offer the option of at home data entry jobs save on costs. This
is because they do not have to spend on acquiring office space
which can very expensive in many parts of India.
In addition, they do not have to spend on the overheads that are
synonymous with running a full-time office. Hence such companies
can afford to pay their employees a higher wage than employees
may be able to get anywhere else. Doing data entry work from
home is also advantageous for the employees as they can work on
their own schedule and in their own time. In that sense they are
their own bosses.
Most employees that are hired on such terms of employment can
decide how many hours of work they want to put in and they can
vary this every month or every week if they like depending o how
busy they are or how much money they want to make.
Some months, for instance, employees may have a greater need for
cash and hence they can put in extra hours that month. The
development of the Indian telecommunication sector and the
Internet systems therefore has been a great boom for the
country. This development and technological advancements in this
arena have created many jobs for Indians.
All that employees are required to possess are basic knowledge
of Internet, fluency in English and computer skills. A fast
typing speed is an added advantage as this allows employees to
complete assignments faster which in turn translates into more
work and hence more pay. Generally, for such jobs and average
typing speed of thirty to fifty words per minute is acceptable
for most positions. .
