The
development of telecommunication systems and the
Internet has been a boom for world economies as this has
led to the creation of many new jobs. People who could
not find work earlier because of being unable to work
outside their residential premises, now have the
opportunity to work with a variety for companies on a
full or part-time basis via the Internet or
telecommunication systems. All around the world today,
for instance, there are many people who perform home
based data entry work. This means many more additions to
the work force of countries and this naturally
translates into a higher per capita income and greater
standard of living in countries.
Places like India, where labor is cheap are major
players in the field of global data entry. This is
because doing this kind of work does not usually require
any special skills or educational qualifications. |
All that employees are required
to possess are basic typing and computer skills coupled with a
fluency in English. This means that many Indians qualify for
such jobs and in some cases where knowledge of technical terms
is required many data-entry companies offer such training
on-the-job free to their employees.
There are a variety of data entry projects in India that one can
choose from. Indian companies offer services like transcribing,
word-processing, billing and many others. The main attraction
that Indian data-companies offer foreign companies is in the
form of cost-effectiveness.
Most Indian companies look for applicants with a few hours of
free time a day, fluency in English, basic computer and typing
skills and a preferred typing speed of at least thirty to fifty
words per minute. This means that even homemakers and college
students qualify for these posts and such part-time workers do
not mind earning a smaller income plus companies do not have to
worry about various schemes and benefits that they have to
arrange for full-time employees.
Indian data-entry companies that offer home-based jobs also save
on the cost of office-space and the overheads connected to
running a full-time office. Hence, these companies can offer
employees a higher wage while keeping their own service
economically viable for foreign companies.
By moving jobs to countries like India where people are willing
to work for lower wages or what has come to be known as offshore
outsourcing, companies in Western countries can is reduce their
operating costs tremendously.
However, in such Western countries, outsourcing has created
quite a stir as many feel that it robs the residents and
citizens of that country of jobs that they may otherwise have
had. However, many economists feel that in the long run, this
process will strengthen the economic foundations of the country.
US companies have been seen to enjoy a reduction of anywhere
between thirty to seventy percent of their operating costs
through outsourcing.
The furor over the Outsourcing controversy came into the
limelight as recently as about a couple of years ago. Since
then, many economists, politicians, journalists, and businessmen
have been debating the advantages and disadvantages of this
method of cutting costs.
