Dance is of various types. It can be ballet, break dance, salsa or bhangra etc. Dance moves or dance steps constitute the dance performance. Dance moves can also be termed as building blocks of the art of dancing. Dance moves don’t work in isolation. If one digs deeper, there are several other complex dance moves suitably categorized into dance patterns, dance rhythms, dance variations etc.
All the dance moves of different dance forms have fixed steps and they are well organized with an objective of teaching the new learners effectively. Various dance forms in Indian context have individuality factor which implies that dance and music are separated and they can work independently. Dance moves have an inherent element of lead and follow along with connection element.
Different dance has different moves though few moves are common among the dances. Sometimes, few dance steps integrate with one another. The name of different dance moves varies from place to place and person to person. Different dance forms including classical and folk have different moves.
For example, Hindu classical dance bharata natya originated in southeast India. This dance is performed by one female and the dance moves are basically combined of performer’s feet and other body movements. In fact, body movement boasts of great variety which makes this dance form very appealing. Similarly, Kathakali is a dance form of southwestern India which is performed only by men and young boys. Here body movements show tremendous energy with high mix of theatrical dances.
Usage of instruments like drums and other percussion instruments accentuate the body movements of dancers. However, one will come across several different terms in dance moves like, ball change, free spin, inside turn, basic figure, box step, basic movement, dosado, basic step, gancho, chaines, grapevine, feather step etc. These along with several others are different dance moves in different dances.
