A tattoo is a mark or a design made by inserting
pigment into the skin. Tattoos may be made on human or animal
skin. Tattoos on humans are a type of body modification for
identification, style, fashion, making a statement etc.
Tattoo art work practiced worldwide since a long time. The
primitive people of Japan, wore facial tattoos. Tattooing was
widespread among certain tribal groups in the Africa, North
America, South America, Europe, Japan, Cambodia and China.
Despite some of the taboos surrounding tattooing, tattoo art

Tattooing has been around for thousands of years since the neolithic
times. Tattoos have some sort of relation to culture and its symbolism.
Tattoo arts in Japan date back to some ten thousand years. Various other
cultures have had their own tattoo designs and traditions.
Tattoos are usually used as symbols of religions, marks of status,
spiritual devotion, decorations etc. The symbolism and impact of tattoos
varies in different places and cultures. Now-a-days tattoos are used
more as ex-pressions of character and freedom of speech.
There are many types of tattoos which can be classified into broad
categories like the chinese tattoo consisting pecularly of the dragon or
the chinese language tattoo also known as the Kanji tattoo. Kanji
tattoos, as they are called, are tattoos consisting of Chinese
characters. Though these tattoos are based on the Chinese or Japanese
writing systems, they are almost vanished in China. Instead,they are a
recent fad in tattoos in Western countries.
Japanese tattoo art has several names such as ‘Irezumi’ or ‘Horimono’ in
the Japanese language. Irezumi is the word for the traditional visible
tattoo that covers large parts of the body like the back. Japanese
tattoo art has a very long history. Other types of tattoos are tribal
tattoos consisting of tribal signs and symbols, word tattoos which has
something written on a body, tattoo sketches consisteing of human and
other animal or bird sketches.
Tattoo art on women usually consists of floral tattoos and butterfly
tattoos. Zodiac art tattoos and sport tattos are famous types of tattoo
conventions. The tatto art of tigers design is famous as well especially
on the arm or the back.
Tattoos can also be classfied according to the place where one wants a
tattoo done. For e.g., tattoo feet art consists of all tattoos designed
on one’s feet ranging from small ones to long ones that end up at the
leg going upwards.
The tattoo artist must wash his or her hands while tattooing. Not just
that but they must also wash the area that will be tattooed. Gloves must
be worn at all times and the wound must be wiped frequently with a wet
disposable towel..
