Antique radios consist of Wood radios, Transistor radios,
Recorders, Record players, Ham radios, Bakelite radios, Plastic
radios etc. People collect all sorts of radios including
the tube portable radio that uses vacuum tubes instead of
transistors. Some of them use AC as well as DC power. Tube
portables are not a recent innovation. The first portable with a
built-in speaker was a 1924 Zenith. Antique radio speakers are
also quite a thing to collect. |
There are a lot of magazines available which talk about antique radio
kits collection. They also include ads for antique radio repair and
restoration specialists. Topics on histories of old radios and
information about their handling are also covered in some articles in
such magazines.
Old wooden radios which include tabletops, tombstones, cathedrals, and
consoles are a great collector’s item. Antique telephone radios also
make for a very good collection. Wooden and brass tube radios look like
a telephone. The receiver of the telephone usually has the tuning system
and the volume controls. Telephone radios are from the period of late
nineteen fifties or early sixties. European transistor portables are
quite antique to make for a collection.
Even transistor table tops are pieces of appreciation in an antique
radio collection. Antique radio collectors also collect classic military
radios. A collector’s favorite type of radio includes the "cathedral"
type that is so familiar to the world of collecting antique radios. Many
people not just love collecting radios they enjoy repairing and
restoring it. They seek pleasure from it and that’s how it becomes their
hobby. Some collectors set niche interests like collecting only the old
1930’s and 40’s radios.
Repairing and restoration of the radio is not just enough, cleaning and
maintaining them as well is also important. It almost can make your
collection splendid. No one would like to look at an old dusty rusty
radio piece; but show them a clean restored functioning radio and the
audience will sure be delighted.
For valuation and reference about an antique old radio, it is better to
take the help of an expert in the field. Showing them the piece
physically helps is the exact valuation and also helps us to know other
details like the type of radio and the period to which it belongs.
