Dolls have been a part of every girl’s childhood. They are usually used as play things. Sometimes they depict religious figures as well. Earlier dolls were made from primitive materials such as clay, fur, or wood. Now dolls are made from plastics and sometimes even glass. Archeologists have also discovered primitive dolls in Egyptian graves constructed of flat pieces of painted wood with hair made of strings of clay. Such different types of dolls have now been known as antique dolls and there are quite a many passionate antique collectors who have made doll collection, their hobby. 

In earlier times dolls were highly cherished possession. Egyptian tombs of wealthy families included pottery dolls which were considered precious.

Dolls are usually strung together using cord or rubber bands. Due to this they may perish over the years and need replacement. There are many professionals who offer restringing services for all bisque, composition and plastic antique dolls collectible. There are many different types of dolls that a collector can collect.

One of them includes antique china dolls that are made of glazed porcelain. These dolls were famous during the 1840s and 80s. China dolls were often identified by their typical hairstyles. Most china antique dolls are fashionably dressed up and due to extreme demand; china heads of the dolls were also sold separately in the 1880s, leaving the owner to make doll’s own body and costume. Antique dolls purse and other accessories were also sold along with the doll itself.

Another type of dolls is the antique German dolls or the bisque dolls. These dolls too were in great demand during the 1840s. These dolls represented exquisite and elaborate fashion trends. Since dolls are quite expensive during those times affluent little girls would perfect their sewing skills by sewing wardrobes for their dolls.

The early 20th century German dolls were the character-faced dolls which were produced on demands of realistic-looking children dolls.
Antique porcelain dolls or vintage dolls are expensive than other kinds of dolls and are based on the popularity of the artists. In general, original artist collectible dolls are far more valuable and costly than mass produced dolls.  Other factors such as age, rarity of the doll, demand, marketing etc also play an important role that affect the worth of the dolls. Apart from these, antique paper dolls can also be collected. For people good at their craft skills can in fact make their own dolls.

Elegant and hand made antique oriental dolls are made of silk and velvet costumes and is quite appealing as well as intriguing.
