The Indian paintings have a glorious history. The history of Indian paintings goes back to earlier period of civilization. It has kept re-inventing itself in accordance with changing dynamics of Indian history. The paintings depicted in the caves of Ajanta and Ellora are the signing example of rich legacy of Indian paintings. Few of the paintings have been found in stone-carved forms in the Stone Age, popularly known as pre-historic age. Paintings are one of the foremost platforms for uninhibited artistic ex-pression. A painting has various forms the likes of which includes miniature paintings and wall paintings. Indian painters have been found to possess the well defined techniques for the creation of paintings. Right from knowing the desired technique for emphasizing pictorial effect and enhancing vivid backdrop, Indian artists have been well acquainted with the various forms of paintings..

The Indian artists have been known to draw inspiration from the tradition, surroundings and number of religions. If we closely observe the earlier paintings, many were influenced from various religious sentiments and few even from rituals like tantric. At the same time, another school of painters were relying on modeling painting forms.


This was achieved by using the technique of pressure variation combined with manipulating the tone of the paintings. Over the decades, the techniques used in the creation of paintings have improved by leaps and bounds. Indian paintings took a defining change in post-independence era. The standard forms witnessed a distinct change. Oil paintings, paper, water color paintings, acrylic etc started to be the standard forms.


Change was also evident in the materials used to make paintings. Now the prime materials were clay, metal chips, natural dyes etc. The Indian paintings also were more in the mould of individualized pattern. Raja Ravi Verma is known as the father of modern India painting. He is remembered as one of the most famous Indian painters. He is credited to mix the original Indian painting art and western techniques. His famous works are the depiction influenced from mythological texts, Mahabharata and Ramayana.
 
Rabindranath Tagore is another influential painter from the series of trendsetters’ artists’ painters. He is credited to revive and accentuate the Bengal school of paintings. He was not only a genius painter but also a talent personified in literature. His aesthetic sense is revered in painting circle. In the same era, few of the other great names were Sarada Charan, A.K.Haldar, and Jamini Roy to name a few. Amrita Shergill made indelible mark as a woman painter. One of the first women painters, she left behind a rich legacy before dying pre-maturely.
 
Post independence period saw emergence of a new style which was quite a revolution in itself. Major painters and famous Indian artists of the time were S H Raza, Jehangir Sabavala, and Laxman Shrestha etc. These eminent painters redefined the way the art of painting was prevailing the country.

Abstract works became a rage and their works were classical example of skills and elegance. In modern day artist painters, M F Hussein and Tyeb Mehta are internationally renowned. They have brought Indian contemporary painting the much deserved world wide recognition...
