When you have a lot
of open space to plan, rocks are mostly the first preference.
Infact there is a story well known of a man who had built his
bungalow in the woods. Repeated burglaries intimated him to
build his house of rock. So from the drawing room to the bedroom
to the rooms outside and even the garden, everything was made of
rock. An idea that kept his house intact for years to come.
However rocks too are of different types even though you see
them everywhere. For instance rocks in the mountainous areas are
different from the rocks at the plateau and hilly areas. Infact
rocks differ from region to region; their shades and built-in
make up too differ. |
If you are rock crazy, then
learn the make-up of the rock before you invest in it. As some rocks
disintegrate with a change in environment. This is because rocks in a
particular environment are meant to be there. They are born from that
environment and can best live there.
Accent boulders are more commonly used in India for landscaping with
rocks. As they add character and impact and indirectly create a lot of
interest. However it is always observed that when accent boulders are
used they are normally placed on the ground and accordingly built on it.
This however looks artificial and out of place. To make it look more
natural bury the bottom of the rock up to 6 inches in the ground, and
then built on it. This will give it a complete natural look.
Feed a little gravel to the dug up area before you bury the rock. This
will ensure more stability. Plant trees around the boulders. Smaller
plants at the corners. You can have some hanging plants or let vines
climb the fence.
You also should have a clear walkway path to your home. You do not want
your guests to walk in murk with dirt dripping from their shoes. Use
rocks and slabs for the path and ensure that they are firm in the
ground; they should not be shaky as they are to provide a firm ground
for people walking.
Give more character to your landscape rocks with colour or tiles. You
can have a stone or marble statute. This will enhance the entire look.
For the final touches add a series of lights available at any hardware
store in India around the large rocks and let your landscape come to
life after dark.
